Whine with HR

Whine with HR is hosted by Juls and Trish, two lawyers and HR professionals with 15+ years of experience, who figure it’s better to laugh at the craziness that is HR than to cry about it. In each episode, Juls and Trish will discuss the wine of the day that they’re drinking and the “whine” of the day that they’re thinking (about).

It's part of the human experience that we tend to hate having uncomfortable or difficult conversations. In fact, many of us will go to great lengths to avoid any conversation that even hints at being awkward or uncomfortable. Unfortunately, as HR professionals and managers, it is part of our job to have such conversations. In this episode, we'll give tips and tricks for making those conversations a little bit easier to manage.
The "Feed Forward" method we discussed during this episode was created by Marshall Goldsmith. You can read more about it at his website: https://marshallgoldsmith.com/articles/try-feedforward-instead-feedback/
We also shared the CHANGE method with you. For reference, here it is: C = Have a CONVERSATION.H = Be HUMAN. A = ADVISE the employee of the problem. N = NAME the specific behaviors that need to change. G = GIVE the employee a chance to respond. E = Set EXPECTATIONS moving forward. And don't forget to DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT!

Employees who behave badly (think: yelling or screaming at co-workers, slacking off, disrupting the workplace environment, etc.) can be toxic to the workplace. And while it is tempting to ignore the behavior and hope it goes away, that rarely works. Ignoring the behavior can also lead to your good employees jumping ship. In this episode, we discuss why it is so important to address bad behavior, as well as the best ways to do so.

Implicit bias is sneaky because we're generally unaware it is even impacting how we think about things, or the decisions we make. In our personal lives, this is potentially problematic. In our work lives, it can be downright dangerous, leaving you and your company at risk for claims of unfair treatment, discrimination, harassment, and the like. In Part One, we discuss what implicit bias is and how it is most likely to show up in the workplace for you as an HR professional or manager.

Do you know who your future leaders are? If one of your key people got hit by a bus (hypothetically), do you have someone who could step into their place? It is never too early, but almost always too late, to start planning for who will lead your company in key roles in the next 3, 5, 10 years. In this episode, we'll discuss some of the best ways to identify those future leaders - and ways to ensure that you are not ignoring employees who could be.
